FAQ

What is Empadronamiento?

Empadronamiento is the process of registering your address with the local city hall (Ayuntamiento) in Spain. It is mandatory for all residents, including students, to establish their legal residence. A minimum 4-month rental contract is required for this process.

What is the difference between an NIE and a TIE?
  • NIE: Número de Identidad de Extranjero, an identification number for foreigners in Spain, typically for EU students.

  • TIE: Tarjeta de Identidad de Extranjero, a residency card for non-EU students that includes their NIE number.

What is the process for TIE renewal, and how long does it take?

The TIE renewal process for non-EU students can take up to 6 months. This timeline is set by the government and cannot be expedited. Any agency or lawyer claiming to speed up the process is providing misleading information.

Can I stay in Spain while waiting for my TIE renewal?

Yes, students can remain in Spain after their TIE expires, provided they have submitted their renewal application. During this period, they can also apply for a Regreso (return authorization) to travel and re-enter Spain while waiting for their renewed TIE.

Do EU students need a TIE?

No, EU students do not need a TIE. Instead, they must apply for an NIE number or a green residency card to establish their legal residence in Spain.
